SUPERFLEX - By Hannah Welter

“SUPERFLEX was founded in 1993 by Jakob Fenger, Bjørnstjerne Christiansen and Rasmus Nielsen. With a diverse and complex practice, SUPERFLEX challenges the role of the artist in contemporary society and explores the nature of globalization and systems of power. They are known for art works with wit and subversive humor that address serious social and cultural concerns. SUPERFLEX describe their works as tools - thereby suggesting multiple areas of application and use.” - http://superflex.net/information/

SUPERFLEX’s piece Free Beer from 2004 was not about giving people beer or free, but was about freedom of speech. It is the first brand of beer with an open/free brand and recipe.

“The project applies modern free software/open source methods to a traditional real-world product. The recipe and branding elements of Free Beer is published under a Creative Commons (Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5) license, which means that anyone can use the recipe to brew their own Free Beer or create a derivative of the recipe.” - http://superflex.net/tools/free_beer

“Originally named Vores Øl (Our Beer), the beer was conceived in 2004 by SUPERFLEX and students from the Copenhagen IT University.” - http://superflex.net/tools/free_beer

The project Copy Right was originally from 2006 and has recreations on 2007,2009,2011,2013, and in 2017. A Replica chair of the renowned Ant Chair by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen from 1953 is manually modified in an attempt to correct and hereby make it more similar to Jacobsen's original design. Hence, mass-produced imitations of a design classic are turned into unique pieces.” - http://superflex.net/tools/copy_right

“The installation consisted of 80 white chairs on a platform, later versions include brown and multi-colored. Thet 27th São Paulo Bienal, Brazil, 2006, curated by Lisette Lagnado, Adriano Pedrosa, Cristina Freire, José Roca, Rosa Martínez and Jochen Volz. The white version was later exhibited at Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Santiago de Chile, 2007.” - http://superflex.net/tools/copy_right

The Investment Bank Flowerpots 2015. Also presented in 2016 and 2017.

“Investment Bank Flowerpots are models of the corporate head quarter buildings operated by twenty of the world's largest investment banks. Each model serves as flower pots for hallucinogenic plants. The largest twenty banks include GoldmanSachs, Deutsche Bank, CitiGroup and JPMorgan Chase. The plants growing from the models are peyote and san pedro cacti containing mescaline as well as marijuana plants.” - http://superflex.net/tools/investment_bank_flowerpots

“Investment Bank Flowerpots exists in two different scales and materials: a 3d printed smaller version in PLA plastic and a larger version cast in concrete. Both versions in a white finish.” - http://superflex.net/tools/investment_bank_flowerpots

“The combination of bank and plant forms the title of each work, for example, Investment Bank Flowerpots/ Deutsche Bank Marijuana.” - http://superflex.net/tools/investment_bank_flowerpots

Thank you!
